About the company
Pitch Black is a professional services company that solves problems.
Exercise Pitch Black 2016 was a three week multinational large force deployment exercise conducted in the Northern Territory. The exercise involved up to 2500 personnel and up to 115 aircraft. Nations represented included: Australia, Canada, Indonesia, France (New Caledonia), Germany, Netherlands, New Zealand, Singapore, Thailand and the USA.
A matter of weeks before Exercise Pitch Black commenced, the Fuel Farm at RAAF Darwin was shut down due to an incident within the facility. The shutdown of the main fuel facility in Darwin threatened to cancel the exercise. The Defence Fuel Service Branch Executive Director of Engineering immediately called Darren Green and requested that he initiate an investigative project with Cameron Barr and Matthew Butler who had recently completed a similar investigation at RAAF Williamtown.
Darren, Matthew and the team quickly mobilised to site and in conjunction with Defence Stakeholders conducted risk assessments and developed a risk mitigation strategy to return the farm to service by implementing stringent interim control measures. Within 2 weeks of the initial shutdown, and with daily Situation Reports to the Director General – Fuel Services Branch, the farm was successfully returned to service within the narrow window of opportunity.
In large part due to the work completed by the site based team involving our now company Directors Matthew Butler, Cameron Barr and Darren Green, alongside a team of Defence personnel from Fuel Services Branch and RAAF Darwin, the fuel farm delivered fuel to the Pitch Black exercise without incident, providing critical capability for the refueling of participating aircraft.
This project was one of many successful projects the team delivered for the Department of Defence. Over the next 4 years a core team of engineers, led by Matthew, Cameron and Darren delivered over 100,000 engineering manhours in close partnership with Defence Fuel Services Branch. So in 2019 when Matthew and Cameron formed a new company, no other name made sense but reference to a small but critical project at RAAF Darwin, where it all began, and hence
Pitch Black Group was formed.
12 months later, Darren Green joined Pitch Black, completing the original team from RAAF Darwin and extending our services into Project and Construction Management. Pitch Black was born in Defence Fuel and founded on excellent customer service. We solve problems for our clients. We have since grown into new markets, offering more services to our clients, but with the same focus on service.
